日本の春のピクニック お花見 OHANAMI |
Cherry blossoms,"Sakura",
embody spring in Japan. At the peak of flowering, everybody
goes on a picnic for cherry blossom viewing,"Ohanami".
We took a British girl, Katie, to Japanese Ohanami. What she
felt like?
桜の花はまさに日本の春の象徴です。誰もがお花見にでかけ、桜の下でピクニックをします。私たちは、イギリス生まれのケイティを、花見客で賑わう桜満開の公園に案内しました。お花見の光景は、ケイティにはどんなふうに見えたのでしょうか？

The date of Ohanami is flexible. People
adjust the calendar for the time to to be expected cherry
blossoms are at their best.
お花見は毎年何月何日に、という固定した日付がありません。お花見をするなら満開の時がベスト。
その年の桜の開花状況に合わせて「今年は早めor遅め」と日程を調整します。地域によっても桜の咲く時期には差があります。
In early spring,
weather forecasts declare the first day of cherry blossom
flowering on TV. Are they uncommon forecasts?
テレビの天気予報で桜の開花予想を見られるよ、と話すと、また驚いた様子。そんな天気予報はイギリスにはないそうです。いわれてみれば確かにめずらしいかも。

南北に長く標高差の大きい日本列島。桜の開花日は地域によって差があります。同じ日に開花するエリアをつないだライン（桜前線）は南から北へ移動していきます。

Japanese people take off their shoes
to sit on a plastic sheet. It's essential to join the open-air
banquet sitting in a circle.
シートのまわりに靴を脱いで上がっているのを見て、家では靴を脱ぐという日本の習慣を守っていると思ったようです。いわれてみれば、車座になって宴会をする時には、家に上がるときのように靴を脱ぎます。
Sometimes one person comes
earlier than others to find a good place for Ohanami, and
stay there for several hours to hold there for his group.
一人だけ先に来て、お花見のためのよい場所をキープしておく“場所取り”の光景です。

That's a difficult question to answer
in a simple word. There are different kinds of groups in the
park, businessmen, children, students, young couples, elderly
couples and so on... someone is drinking beer, someone is
eating homemade lunch, and someone is taking photos. They
all are enjoying Ohanami as their own styles.
When I was thinking the purpose of Ohanami, the windblown
flowers turned the sky into all pink.
"Fantastic !!", Katie seemed to find the answer
by herself.
ケイティに「何のため？」と聞かれて、一言では答えられませんでした。公園を見回してみると、スーツを着たサラリーマンやOL、町内会で集まって宴会をしているおじさん達、小さい子を連れた奥さんグループ、新歓コンパの大学生たち、コンビニの袋を敷いておにぎりを食べている若いカップル、散歩がてら立ち寄った老夫婦、学校帰りにケータイで写真を撮りあう高校生。手作りのお弁当を囲んだり、屋台の焼きそばに行列したり、花見酒と称するビールや日本酒を酌み交わしたり。桜の下でいろんな人たちが思い思いの形の花見を楽しんでいます。Why？…桜がきれいだから、春の訪れを感じたいから？桜の木に対する思いも人や時代によって色々・・・と考えていた時に、風に散る花びらが空を桜色に染めました。それを見て「ファンタァスティック
!!」と喜ぶケイティは、もうその答えをひとつ見つけたようです。 |
