Passu Glacier

Feb 4, 2010

【Japanese version→】

There is a bridge in the vicinity of the south entrance of Passu.(photo①)  The water that melts from Passu Glacier comes out, flows under this bridge and enters the Hunza river.  This river is being called Passu River by the villagers.

In 2006, we went up the flow of Passu River, and were able to see the edge of Passu Glacier.(photo②③)

The lake came into view after we climbed for about 30 minutes the rock road along the river.  This lake with water from Passu Glacier is called Passu Lake.(photo④)  Though Passu Glacier seen on the right of the photograph④ shines in white, the nearby glacier poured into the lake looking grayish as a result of piling up of sand.

Seeing by the photograph⑤ like the rock is a point of Passu Glacier. The fragment of the glacier was floating in the surface of the lake.(photo⑥)

Mr. Ochiai who had guided us walked on the edge of the lake, went to the place from where the water flowed from the glacier, and looked at it.(photo⑦)

When looking down, the flows from the lake seem like they mightily descend to the Passu village.  We could see the mountains of Passu stretching out in front of our eyes.

People who had reached Passu at last 300 years ago might have thought that the water from this glacier was Allah’s blessing.
Because the villagers of Passu gave the name of Passu to the glacier, the lake, and the river, etc. , we can imagine the villagers’ desire to give importance to their glacier, lake and river.
